Completely agree about the importance of Spanish red peppers. Somehow, these peppers in a jar are so much nicer than the results of roasting them yourself here in the UK! We put our favourites in our online shop. £3 a jar. They are wood roasted red peppers from Logrono. They are amazing on their own or with goat's cheese or with a bit of tuna rolled in or or or. Possibilities are endless. Check it out -

It wasn't nutella, as it was more of a clear, syrupy looking thing. I wish I would have tried it, because it is driving me nuts trying to figure out what it is called. EVERYBODY in Hondaribbia was eating this in the morning. Thanks for responding! I love the Basque country and especially its FOOD!!!! best, MB

From my experience living there, in Donostia, I imagine that they were spreading a type of mermelada, or jam, over the bread. Mermelada de naranja or albaricoque, orange or apricot jam, are pretty typical. Other than that, they could have also been spreading Nocilla, the popular version of Nutella in Spain.

I just returned from Hondaribbia/Donostia and every morning in the cafe I saw people eating a thick bread covered with something -- honey? syrup? Do you know what it is called? thanks

I picked the absolute WRONG location to call home to lay down my roots( CA, USA ). If there were ever a group heading out to Euskadi( Euskal Herria/ Pais Vasco ), save the front row seat for me. While you're at it, a trip like this is augmented with someone very special in life( preferrably, a Basque mate ).
