Jai Alai: Urbieta; new player in Dania this summer.

March 4th, 2009 Tiffany No comments

Iñaki Urbieta is very concentrated on his studies, but in the horizon he can already see glimpses of a bright future, a future in the world of professional Jai Alai. This young man from Zumaia will this July, only 19 years old, make his debut in Dania Jai Alai in Florida. There he will be united again with some of his friends, Enbil, Korta and others.

Are you excited about your debut in America?

Yes, very. I didn’t expect to take this step so soon. I’m going in July when my studies end, and I will stay there one season and then we will see what happens.

What are you studying?

A “modulo superior” in development, the same thing as Gotzon Enbil. It is working alright and I pass my courses.

Will it be hard to adapt to a new country?

I’m sure I will miss my family and my friends, but I imagine that it will help a lot to get to know the other players over there.

Will you watch some NBA games live?

Yes I would really like to. I like the Lakers and I think it is a great show to watch.

Have you ever competed in a quiniela game?

Yes, in the final of the Master Jai International Open, and in my town I have also played quiniela games a couple of times. But alltogether they aren’t really very many games, and we will just have to wait and see how well I will manage to adapt to it.

What will be the biggest challange during the first months in the USA?

Learn the language, adapt to the way of life and show a good level of play in the cancha.

What did your friends say when you told them you were going to Florida?

They don’t know anything, because first I want to pass everything, and then I will tell them that I’m going. At the moment, only my parents know.

And what do they say?

They are a bit sad that I’m leaving from home, but they notice that I’m very excited about it and that makes them happy.

What memory will stick in your mind form your time as an amateur player?

It has been a really nice time. I competed for may years together with Gorostola, and a bit later together with Peio. When it comes to championships I’ll stick with the one in Gipuzkoa this year, and the championship of Euskadi in 2008.

You will get to know many players in person.

Yes,  Goikoetxea, López, Luis, Enbil… When I started playing, Goiko was just about to make his debut. I have always gotten along very well with them all, and I’m thrilled to get the opportunity to train together with them. Sometimes I went by bus to watch them play in Gernika or St Juan de Luz.

Zumaia has always been an important place in the world of Jai Alai.

There are much passion for the game here, and many of the young players have high expectations for the future. But at the moment it’s a bit tougher with the closing of the fronton, and the new one hasn’t opened yet. The players have to practise outside, and in addition to that there are many other sports in the village now like soccer, team handball and Remo.

One of your friends has been playing brilliant in Remonte lately.

Yes, Etxabe II, who is a professional and a god friend of mine. He went to the cesta school in Zumaia. We studied together and sometimes we would even have dinner together. He just recently made his debut, but is already playing really good. I would like to go and watch him play live.

How was Etxabe as a Jai Alai player?

He was good. He didn’t play for a long time, but he was always in good shape and had a great quality in his play. What happened was that he didn’t want to go to America to play, so he sticked to Remonte, and now it seems like he made a good choice.

Treku and Joakin reacted during the last ten points of the game, which they ended up winning with 25-22.

Despite of the loss, the blue team started in an inspiring way. Kevin showed great strength and Leuke caught everything thrown at him, and always went in the right direction. In this way they managed to climb to 9-14 and later 11-15. But at this point the other team seemed to wake up again.

Joakin played with more self esteem than in the first part of the game, and Treku became a lotmore active and started to score points for his team. The scores turned to 17-15, and they didn’t stop until reaching the final score of 25 against 22.

26/02/2009: Churruca has been the main character in Orlando Jai Ali, where he managed to reach no less then twelwe wins. Alltogether this gives him 59 victories, which places him as number four in the Most Wins. Olabe is still in the lead with 67 quinielas won. Among the backcourters Gino and Tommy have stood out during the last days, each accounting for nine wins.

In Miami Lopez is still in the lead thanks to the ten pairs quinielas and 5 individuals that he has won since last thursday. With last weeks wins, he managed to increase the distance to Beñat and Girard. Also worth mentioning is the the good play by Aizarna, which has given him ten wins, and the bad luck for Irastorza, Ladutxe and Lejardi, who have not been able to gather many points due to injuries.

En Dania Erik has a firm grip on the Most Wins through his eleven quinielas won last week. That is two more than Korta and three more than Diego and Arrieta. The best backcourter has been Manex, who is now at place seven. Other good news from Dania is the reappearence of Gotzon Enbil.

In Ft. Pierce Hernandez became best pelotari last week with six victories, one more than Troy. Hernandez is still number one in the standings.

Bereikua Off To A Good Start in Miami

February 16th, 2009 Tiffany No comments

I first got to see Bereikua play at Ocala back in 2003.That’s the first year Orlando replaced the Ft Pierce players, who had alternated between the Fort & Ocala. He came there with the reputation of a Superstar and lived up to the hype .He handily won the most wins and the frontcourt Doubles Championship but was denied the Triple Crown by Aizarna who had Bereikua’s number in the singles competition. I can remember asking Jack Carr who was visiting Ocala,to watch this guy play.He did and said “do you believe that” Bereikua had executed a shot with such power it was unbelievable ,especially for his size at that time.

The photo below shows his tender side but believe me he has another side and it’s tough.Back in 2003 in Spain in a Championship Tournament Bereikua-Enbil against Barronio-Irastorza he was hit in the mouth with the pelota hard, knocking out three teeth and bleeding badly.Well, he just stopped long enough to stuff some guage into his mouth and continued playing.

Since joining Miami on Thursday Feb 12th,he has turned in 6 wins from 38 starts playing in the late games with the best players in the world. His biggest career disappointment was when he played at Dania, back in 03/04 he never seemed to get untracked and turned in average stats. Bereikua is from Gernika,Spain, stands 6′1″ and weighs around 190 Lbs.He will turn 34 this November. He also played at Orlando and the Basque Country and has a long list of accomplishments including a Championship partido win over Goikoetxea in I believe a 35 point match.

Jai Alai: Game 7 Dania Jai alai Friday Feb 6th

February 7th, 2009 Tiffany No comments

Friday Feb 6 2009

GAME 7-Spec 9-Tri,Spr

  1. Xabat-Chasio
  2. Toto-Carvalho
  3. Erik-Larrea
  4. Angel-Elgezabal
  5. Arrieta-Eibar
  6. Korta-Ulises
  7. Olate-Amigoren
  8. Jairo-Sierra II

SUBS: Cancio-Manex

Friday night the 6th of Feb, just another night at the Palace of Dania Jai alai, Heck No!! this night the players were out to showcase their skills. The crowd though not huge , cheering and jeering on most points so I would say there was 2 things for sure, a lot gamblers, and some beer to make it sound like a full house on many points, well maybee not full but half full. lol.

The Night started with a couple of players scratched for the evening, giving a few pelotaris a very busy night. Amigorena and Oyarbide would not be there for their games some of the players would have to play 7 games this evening, taking the place of the scratched players. Lets get to the game, game 7 would start at 9pm eastern time, with 7 games remaining in the evening, Manex was the player who took the place of the scratched Amigorena. Xabat started the match off with an overserve, which was met with jeers from the crowd, Eric and Larrea would take out the Mexican Combo of Toto and Carvalho who had received a freebie thanks to Xabat.

Eric for the fans who dont know is the most talented player to come to dania in a very long time, only 22 years old has the shots and the catching ability of many veterans, Post 3 would run off 3 points in a very aggresive fashion, eric going for the kill shots on when the opportunity was there. Post 5 would send post 3 off the court ,they would be riding the bench in 3 minutes or so later when they were sent packing by Olate and Manex Post 7 , Manex who was subbing for Amigorena to say the least rose to the occasion, catching every ball that came his way,Olate the frontcouter was completely error free throwing with a very high speed to take out many teams, he also was a catching machine scraping balls off the wall that most players could not. This team would be doing the victory dance at the end.

There was a few to many overserves in this game 3 and one underserve. The match was Won by post 7 in the second round plainly outplaying all others on the court. The end result 7-3-2-1 Quinella $33 Perfecta $76 Trifecta $411 and the superfecta $1,042 Time of the match 30 minutes
