Nonick 2010 at EITB headquarters in Bilbao

Good day Basques!

The second and last day of Nonick Conference started with workshops and was followed by Andie Grace from ‘Burning Man’ and Zaryn Dentzel, creator of ‘Tuenti’.

Zaryn Dentzel is the creator of Tuenti, the most successful and important social network among young people all over Spain.

With 27 pro cent of the votes SubMate was the winner of Nonick’s Startup 2.0 Competition. Minube came second with 25 percent and the bronze medal was for Askaro with 23 percent of the votes. Stereomood and Good job got 10 and 13 percent respectively.

John Malkovich’s ‘The Infernal Comedy’ will be at Arriaga Theatre in the Basque town of Bilbao on Tuesday, May 18th.

To finish with, Basque Museum ARTIUM presents Txuspo Poyo’s UN(inverse). This work deals with the relationship between the setting up of the United Nations Organization during the period following the World War II.

Music, opera, theatre and music over the weekend

Dear Basques,

We are celebrating Mother’s Day in the Basque Country today, so happy mother’s day to all amas (Mother in Basque language)!

Let’s have a look at what we have for today on our Basque people all around the world wall in Facebook:

El Superbarbero de Sevilla, an adaptation of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville is at Arriaga Theatre in Bilbao from May 1st to 3rd and to celebrate its 10th Anniversary and with audiences of over 10 million so far, Stage Entertainment, brings Saturday Night Fever from May 6th to 16th.

You can also enjoy this video of Dantzari Eguna (Basque Dance Day) in Bayonne, northern Basque Country.

Remember Rufus Wainwright will visit the Basque town of Bilbao on May 9th. The Canadian musician will present his album All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu at the Euskalduna Conference Centre and Concert Hall at 20:30.

And lastly, as part of the ACB Basketball League, Caja Laboral defeated Real Madrid to nearly secure 2nd place.

Edurne Pasaban reaches 13th 8,000 peak

The Basque climber Edurne Pasaban reached the summit of Annapurna in the Himalayas. This is her 13th 8,000 peak, which was 8,091-meters high. Congratulations Edurne!

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo will be performing at Arriaga Theatre in Bilbao, Biscay (Basque Country) until Sunday, April 18th. Since their beginnings, the Trocks have established themselves as a major dance phenomenon throughout the world.

Lastly, Tiffany has posted a new item on our Basque Pelota blog ‘Dos Paredes’. This time she tells us that Pairs Champion Aitor Zubieta will not be able to start the Second Tier Manomanista Championship  as the 26 year old finished the Pairs final with severe pain in his right hand.

Basque soccer team Athletic Bilbao thrash Almeria 4-1

Hello Basques all around the world!

How are you? We hope you are enjoying Sunday.

Athletic Bilbao pressed their claim for a spot in next season’s Champions League by trouncing Almeria 4-1 to climb to sixth in La Liga on Sunday and Osasuna gained a very important victory (2-0) over Zaragoza after scoring two goals at the beginning and at the end of the match.

ESPAÑA-FÚTBOL-LIGA PRIMERA DIVISIÓN

In the ACB Basketball League, Power Electronics puts an end to Bilbao Baskets winning streak. Both teams might face each other in next week Eurocups final if they win their semi-finals games. Teletovic and Splitter lead Caja Laboral to 65-78 win at Cajasol and to finish with, Lagun Aro GBC fell short on 74-73 loss at Asefa Estudiantes. After the defeat, the Basques are just one win away free from the relegation zone.

Samuel Sanchez won the Amorebieta-Etxano classic race on Sunday. The Klasika Primavera (Spring classic) is a single-day road bicycle race held annually in April in Amorebieta, Biscay (Basque Country).

And for those who like music, we let you know that Michael Nyman Band will perform the best of Muchael Nyman programme on Wednesday, April 14th at Arriaga Theatre in Bilbao (Basque Country).

How is the day going? We have just a few things to tell you today:

For Basque Pelota lovers, Asegarce have announced an extension to the contract of Ruben Beloki, which will keep him in the employ of the Bilbao based company until March 2012. You can read all the information in our Basque Pelota Blog.

From March 18th to 21 Arriaga Theatre in Bilbao hosts the premiere of Nebbia (Niebla) in Spain. Nebbia is presented by Cirque Éloize and Teatro Sunil, written and directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca.

In addition to this, the theatre adaptation of Patxi Gallego’s comic, ‘Xabinaitor’ arrives to Arriaga Theatre in Bilbao on March 22 and 23.

San Francisco Basque Cultural Center celebrates 50th anniversary

We have something interesting to tell you: San Francisco Basque Cultural Center celebrates 50th anniversary and to commemorate this event a bertso performance will be exhibited at San Francisco Basque Cultural center with four active US bertsolariak and two Basques: Maialen Lujanbio and Andoni Egaña.

Mexican singer Lila Downs presents her latest album in Bilbao. Her latest album Lila Downs y La Misteriosa: En Paris includes her greatest hits and will be presented at Arriaga Theatre in Bilbao on March 15th.

Soprano Maria Bayo will be in Donostia-San Sebastian tomorrow and will perform at Victoria Eugenia Theatre together with the French pianist Maciej Pikulski.

And to finish with, and according to Eustat data, the percentage of Basque civil weddings was up in third quarter of 2009. 2,652 weddings were held in July, August and September 2009, 12% down on the previous year.
