With just four days to go to reach the 12,000 dollar funding target, Ipuina Kontatu has received 3,090 dollars backing and a mountain of moral support. The 45th edition of Heineken Jazzaldia will kick off in Donostia on Wednesday with Patti Smith, Elvis Costello, Ron Carter and Portico Quartet, among others.

Basque Country’s most powerful observatory opens in Bilbao. The observatory, built on the roof of Bilbao’s Technical College boasts a dome of more than 3.5 meters in diameter.

Basque unemployment rate stood at 9.1% in 2nd quarter of 2010. The number of people in work stood at 951,000, which was a net increase of 8,400 people compared to the previous quarter (+0.9%), according to Eustat data.

‘Arrain Azoka’ in Bermeo

Hello Basques!

It’s really warm and sunny here in the Basque Country today, a really nice day to visit ‘Arrain Azoka’ (Fish Fair) in the Basque town of Bermeo as it is celebrating its 16th edition. Over thirty stalls are installed in Parque La Lamera Park with the aim to display their produce, of which many are very difficult to find on the market nowadays.

Blues musician John Mayall will be in Bilbao, San Sebastian and Vitoria on May 23rd, 26 and 29th, respectively.

According to Eustat data, the number of visitors to the Basque Country increased by 10% in April 2010.

Basque traditional fiesta ‘Ochomayos’ kicks off

Dear Basques,

If you don’t have any plans for the weekend, you should visit Orduña and enjoy the Basque traditional fiesta ‘Ochomayos. This year, Mexican music and culture will be special guests of these fiestas.

European Film Week opens with Metropolis. The event commemorates ‘Europe Day‘ and will be presided over by Basque Premier Patxi Lopez and Minister of Science and Innovation Cristina Garmendia.

To finish with, the retail trade sector of the Basque Country registered a 5.3% rise in nominal sales in the first quarter of 2010 with regard to the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data.

How are you feeling today? Any plans for Easter? If you are planning to visit the Basque Country, there are many places you can visit and we are sure you will love all of them! Besides, according to weather forecast we will have settled weather mostly cloudless in the Basque Country this Easter.

San Francisco Basque Cultural Center celebrates 50th anniversary

We have something interesting to tell you: San Francisco Basque Cultural Center celebrates 50th anniversary and to commemorate this event a bertso performance will be exhibited at San Francisco Basque Cultural center with four active US bertsolariak and two Basques: Maialen Lujanbio and Andoni Egaña.

Mexican singer Lila Downs presents her latest album in Bilbao. Her latest album Lila Downs y La Misteriosa: En Paris includes her greatest hits and will be presented at Arriaga Theatre in Bilbao on March 15th.

Soprano Maria Bayo will be in Donostia-San Sebastian tomorrow and will perform at Victoria Eugenia Theatre together with the French pianist Maciej Pikulski.

And to finish with, and according to Eustat data, the percentage of Basque civil weddings was up in third quarter of 2009. 2,652 weddings were held in July, August and September 2009, 12% down on the previous year.
